"At the dawn of November 12, 1932, Xi Sigma chapter of Spartanburg, South Carolina had its birth. Soror Elizabeth Lemon, Regional Syntaktes, received a hurried call informing her that there were five young women in that city who were desirous of entering the sisterhood of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. They wanted to be organized on the natal day of the sorority. With solemnity and dignity, these charter members pledged themselves to live up to the standards as set and followed by other chapters.
These women assumed the responsibility of providing an atmosphere in which friendship and social contact may be developed. Xi Sigma was officially chartered on November 11, 1937. Charter members included: Inez Elesta Ashley, Susie Edna Boulware, Bessie L. Gartrelle Brown, Florence Gladys Coleman, and Johnnye Maude Jones.
Through the years Xi Sigma has dedicated itself to service within the Spartanburg community through projects and activities. The chapter has partnered with the NAACP, League of Women Voters, March of Dimes, Sickle Cell Anemia organization and local and state government to bring positive impact to the community.
In "keeping the Legacy alive" Xi Sigma has help cultivate and inspire within the undergraduate membership. The chapter has established four undergraduate chapters: Lambda Kappa at Winthrop University (1987), Mu Psi at Clemson University (1988), Pi Zeta at USC Upstate (2001) and most recently the regional undergraduate colony at Wofford College (2024)
